This year, approximately 400 elementary and middle school students from Ward 8 in Washington DC attended the Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit (AEYS). During this free outdoor event, students interacted with environmental educators from numerous public and private organizations and engaged in hands-on learning experiences. Climate Classes, working with ScienceTheEarth and the AAAS STEAM Team affinity group, worked directly with approximately 200 students to teach them how to grow their own basil plants. By growing basil, students learned how to grow their own locally sourced good while reducing their carbon footprint.
